A massive new residential development in Glenmore could eventually have 1,400 homes.

The so-called Diamond Mountain project would contain a mix of single-family homes, townhomes, and apartments, Kelowna council heard Monday.

Council authorized staff to begin developing an area structure plan for the development proposal. Among other things, the plan would specify the road layout, identify the location of housing neighbourhoods, and outline amenities such as public parks and walking trails.

Many of the proposed new homes would be built south of John Hindle Drive, the road that will eventually link Glenmore Road with the UBC Okanagan campus. The area has long been planned for residential development, council heard.

A number of open houses will be held next year, with the area structure plan likely to be brought forward for council’s approval in late 2013 or early 2014.

Mayor Walter Gray observed that, at a projected size of 1,400 homes, Diamond Mountain would be approximately as large as the Dilworth Mountain development.
